Process Flow Chart

Wet Blue:
Wet Blue is achieved in a series of vats with increasing tanning liquor concentrations, including rocker-section vats for agitation and lay-away vats without agitation. Tannins, derived from hydrolysable (chestnut, myrobalan) and condensed (hemlock, wattle) sources, likely bond through hydrogen bonding to protein chains.

Crust:
After re-tanning and drying, the resulting crust undergoes finishing operations to enhance softness and conceal imperfections. Treatment involves the use of an organic solvent or water-based dye and varnish, resulting in a finished product with 66-85% dry matter.

Finishing:
The finishing process, following crusting and drying, includes additional operations to perfect the end product.
